What is Floating?

Sensory Relaxation

Floating is a transformational experience allowing your body and mind to free itself from stress, time and sensations while weightlessly lying in a perfect mixture of water and 1,000 pounds of Epsom Salt. Floating has been know to release muscle tension, induce inspiring thoughts and creativity, enhance the senses and activate neurotransmitters tapping into your peak performance and creating a calm mind and body to help you deal with the tasks of daily life. Floating also helps with insomnia and one hour in the pod is equivalent to 6-8 hours of sleep. The effects of floating can be felt immediately and have a time release effect that lasts for the next few days. Like meditation or yoga, the effects are cumulative, so the more often you float, the more improvement you see and the better you feel.

Here at FLOAT in Sausalito, we have four Float Pods, each in a private room to help ensure you get the full sensory deprivation experience.

What should I bring?

We have full locker rooms here at FLOAT, and we provide robes, towels, and slippers as well as toiletries for your use before and after your Sensory Deprivation Float Session.

What if my hair is dyed?

At FLOAT Marin, we ask that you wait 48 hours after dying your hair before experiences a Sensory Deprivation Float Session. If you have a washout or temporary color in your hair, you should not float or use a swim cap, but please be aware that if your hair color damages the pod or the water, you will be responsible for the damage.

Should I avoid eating before?

You should not eat a large meal just before floating, but you should not be starving either. Luckily, FLOAT is located in Marin’s relaxing Sausalito just a short drive from SF, and there are many dining options to choose from for after your Float, Sauna and/or Cryotherapy Session.

Should I avoid alcohol before?

You should not float if you are buzzed or drunk. You will feel like you are spinning and would most likely feel nauseous. The Epsom salt in our Float Pods pull toxins from your body, so the effects of alcohol toxins are amplified. We would recommend Floating before a nice dinner in Marin, Sausalito or San Francisco which are all near FLOAT.

Should I avoid caffeine before floating?

At FLOAT, we want you to have the most relaxing experience possible during your Float Session, and as such we would recommend that you do not drink a lot of caffeinated beverages beforehand.

Yes, as long as you are healthy and do not have any restrictions from your doctor. Many pregnant women have experienced sensory deprivation at FLOAT, and they find that there are many benefits to floating while pregnant and the feeling of weightlessness is a welcome relief from the pressure of carrying a baby. If you have any questions as to whether it would be ok, please consult your doctor beforehand.

What if I am menstruating?

At FLOAT, we ask that you follow the same procedure you would if you were going to a pool or hot tub for your float pod session.

How old do you have to be?

We have had people float with age ranges of 9- 85, and have seen benefits for everyone from the anxious adolescent, high school football players and track stars to people with back injuries and insomnia. It depends on the person and what they are looking to benefit from more so than the age.

I’m claustrophobic; can I keep the lid open?

Yes, we have had many claustrophobic people in our float pods, and you can definitely keep the lid open or partially open. Some have found that closing the lid was fine as well and that the pod is more spacious than they had anticipated. You also have the option to keep the lights and meditation music on for the whole session, and we have an intercom inside in case you need to reach the front desk. Many of our guests, here at FLOAT, have found that floating helps their claustrophobia and anxiety and that walking out into beautiful and serene Sausalito adds to the relaxation effects.

How warm is the water?
